“House of Memory” by Kim Myeong-Ri

The sound of falling rain grows outside the door.
There’s no reason for anyone to visit a house perched on a mountainside
this late at night—a well-timed downpour between two mountains—and still
as the light for the sensor at the door flashes,
it seems that someone’s come from far off.
The thin autumn trees are at a loss for deeper words
and the chimes call out into the night air,
not caring if the birds might hear.
When I close my eyes, clouds drift off dry ice
from the empty eye sockets of the unseen flock of birds.
Memories like a distant crumbling of petals
between time’s pure eyes come through the night’s dangerous reds.
