“Backcountry Metaphor” by Shin Yong-Mok

Like an amputee’s discarded leg,
I’m lying down.
Somebody closes a window. The passing sky overhead resembles bloodstains on an empty ICU bed in a darkened room.

Someone is leaving me. The hurried clack, clack of crutches. Where could my youth be going?
Unwrapping the bandages in the delicate red of the evening light,
I see infection setting in at the incision,

I know. Night wades through the mud, boots stripped off in the marsh of my body.
Between the shards of earthen jars and distant twinkling of stars,
deep in my body a sweltering heat grows,

and the darkness snips the laces of my boots with scissors.
There is the faint smell of disinfectant,
fog passing through the marsh plants, and time’s peaks breaking the even lines of the cardiograph

while stars’ footsteps are heard clack, clacking. Memories don’t rot away. The mud swallows up my boot,
the wind chews at it like gum,
and my empty pant leg whips in the wind.

I see the wind racing by. In the emptiness above, a shooting star disappears
in an instant. The moment of its shining, an answer—stillness after the breaking of windows in the night at its descent.
Like a wheel hung above the empty bed in the darkness of the ICU.

Life is a path through crooked passageways.
Though I’m here for now, I’ll go far someday, a fluorescent light forever lit deep inside my body,
marking my way with the footprints of my boots.
