“Me, You” by Park Sang-Soon

I wish that you didn’t get angry watching a stream,
even when it rises to overflow its banks.

I wish that I wasn’t afraid of coming across a cat in the night,
that even if that night cat bit your ankle, you would stay on your feet, unaffected.

I wish that I didn’t dream about you,
that the spring stars didn’t make me fall asleep,
that when I dreamt I didn’t swim in the clear, bright sea.

I wish that you were a rubber eraser smelling artificially of strawberries.
I wish that for a year and a day you wore a rubber skirt
that smelled of fake strawberries.

I wish that you were depressed for a long time,
that no one could cure you.
And also, that you weren’t in pain.

I wish you were nothing,
that you didn’t exist and instead of you, only
a trickling stream with your likeness, large petals softly falling,
a cat’s shadow growing longer beneath the moonlight of the long night,
a sea in a dream…and an eraser.
I wish I had those kinds of things.

I wish you never grew angry, that you never laughed.
And when someday, some moment, you suddenly don’t exist,
I wish that I had the misfortune of living out the rest of my life.
