“Land of Fire” by Nam Jin-Woo

The hair of the people in this country is turning into fire. They all walk with a blaze sprouted from their heads, and whenever anyone wants to light a cigarette or a fireplace, they simply tilt their heads rather than use a match. There is no need to be afraid walking a dimly lit path as evening falls because their thicket of hair shines brightly in all directions. It only fades when the shining strands fall against a pillow and people drift off to sleep. When loving couples from this country meet, instead of kissing they press their foreheads together and their love climaxes when their hairs which burn like torches entwine and up climbs a bigger flame than either one alone. They walk down their path while a tree of sparks and fireworks branches upwards. Fireworks go off like an artillery salute and birds take flight with flaming feathers between their beaks. All they fear is rain, for when the wet season comes, they shut themselves indoors, wrapping up and grasping at their heads to push out the sound of the rain. When the dullness of the rainy season ends, they diligently re-emerge in search of someone. Now, where is that country, you ask? Try falling for someone just once. A warm fire will spout from above your head, and in just a few days you’ll find yourself wandering a vast land of fire with no place of your own.
