“Salt Storehouse” by Song Chang-Ho

By asking around, I’ve come all the way to a salt storehouse
in search of the woman who ran off without repaying a debt.
Not a single person inside
and salt stopped being stored here a long ago,
leaving it completely emptied.

I already have a guess
and it’s not that the owner of the storehouse
flew off like a wind to the west, heart fluttering,
to meet a bride with a face as white as salt.

When I came to see the deer-like sea in the days of my youth,
I used to think it was a storehouse for love.
Jumping into the sea, hand-in-hand in youth,
I never came to the storehouse casually either, but

also didn’t rest having seen the sea up close. I long since lost the stomach for alcohol,
so much so that I remember my pledge to give up drinking.
Remember the alcohol which drenched her hair.
She sat crouched on the beach and cried for a long time.

There is still no one in the salt storehouse,
but there’s always a woman somewhere spreading salt
in this all too salty world.

And for me, there’s somewhere I should return to but
without an expectation of love.
The only thing able to grow as worn as me by myself
is this salt storehouse here.
