“Lost Gift” by Shim Bo-Seon

Separation is a message from another planet
about us who die every day and daily
but can’t accept it
because a death we can believe in is always the last to arrive.
This odd gift of yours
might have been endearing on another planet.
On this one, it was frightening.
On this one, I had no name for it,
and so I lost it.
This nameless gift:
a star falling by chance
one night,
a watch which stopped in my hands ten years ago,
things ceasing to exist in space.
Shoulders which turned away
have never heard the long, low sound of their breathing.
Yet I have and wept.
