Beneath a circle
cut out of the darkness under a stand of light,
you too wonder, like a passing dream,
if you’ve ever received one.
Then say, “Let’s write old-fashioned love letters.”

What can I hope for with this love letter?
The sea’s lighthouse?
Something as difficult to find as an oasis in the desert?
A dream-filled eye?
When the time comes,
let’s write with singing hearts.
Let’s write even if we’re lonely.
Like when I knocked and knocked again against your window,
then left.

If I had knocked three times, it seemed the glass might break……
I must’ve seen blood.
I must’ve seen you.
Is this excess the essence of love? A mistake in it?

My eraser is still white;
its fallen bits of rubber piling through the night are black.
Like handwriting in sand,
no effort is needed to wipe them away.
Tomorrow,
when the two of us are again erased,
let’s write love letters like in a age long gone.

“Let’s Write Love Letters” (연애편지를 쓰자) originally appeared in Daum – 70 Representative Korean Poets.
