“And a Red Arrow Through the Heart” by Heo Yeong-Ja

Don’t touch. An unwavering stare. Having traveled far on foot with a red arrow through the heart, the act is impressive. Symmetrical curve to his shoulders: the image of peace from behind. Today even the breeze politely follows at his shadow, and flowers underfoot bow their heads in his direction. O poetry of sadness, deep and deeper still, why do I want to cast myself against him and weep? His poetry—red like a nucleus, trembling like an emergency. I’ve washed my dirtied feet in it countless times. Countless years have passed, and now his hair is white. White as the eye of a hurricane, and he gives off the scent of sunshine. He started with empty hands and I know that the emptiness of his hands became the focus of his steps. That is being a person unwilling to wound another, being one to endure one’s own tears. So no one is wounded in his poetry. None is injured. It was him who showed me to stand on my own and travel far on foot.

The original poem appeared in the fall 2011 issue of Litopia.
