“A Stroll Inside a Black Pocket” by Kang Seong-Eun

Since your hands were cold, you slid them inside your pockets.
Since snow was thickly falling,
my hand slipped inside.
Since your hands were in that dark place,
I placed a single hand inside it.
That day where were we going?

Because of hands with racing hearts, we strolled on and on.
As snow fell and light shined brilliantly,
where were we walking
while being led by hands which had become a heart?

There was never a moment when our steps stopped.
There was never a moment our hands let go of one another’s.
But in the pocket
a shark shook its fin as it circled
and plants which exist just as shadows grew.
Our two hands intertwined darkly as they entered.

How can your hand smell so bloody yet be so beautiful?
Neither of us spoke a word.
Even though black blood spilled out until it wet our ankles,
we imagined a fresh and vivid spring.

One day, we each disappeared in separate seasons,
but among the empty ruins inside the pocket
there are two hands cutting each other deeply with sharp fingernails
as white snow falls thickly on them.
