“Love’s Starlight” by Heo Man-Ha

Snowflakes fall as quietly serene as a mother
gazing at the child nursing at her breast.
In that gaze—the sound of wind rushing past a whip,
the briefly rising scent of wild daffodils bloomed in a frozen season—
comes the realization through her own pain of the suffering her child will one day meet.

In the mother’s sub-zero body heat, there is a burning star.
In looking towards the star, it’s all too intimate. And in that intimacy, it is all too far.
Indwelled by sadness and resolution, the mother’s face is limitlessly calm.
Ah, mother of seven sorrows!

Just as the sea is a mirror reflecting the heights of the blue skies,
sometimes what they call love is
the falling of a distant star from the heart’s sky
to become a twinkling star in the sky of someone else’s heart.

“Love’s Starlight” (사랑의 별빛) originally appeared in Daum – 70 Representative Korean Poets.
