“Fortunate Things” by Kim So-Yeon

Rain is falling. When rain falls, I take out my cardigan from the closet to put on. When I wear my cardigan, I place my hands in the pockets. When I place my hands in the pockets, I feel the seashells inside them. It’s morning.

Rain is falling. In the past these shells from who knows where called out to all the seas. Each one to a different wave. Each one to a different bubble. Each one, a different ray of sunshine casting the same shadow. I can’t remember any seas from my past.

Let’s think of a more distant sea,
the umbrella in London,
the snowman in Quebec, the wool hat in Iceland.
If that’s too lonely,

the blanket in Bombay,
the rubber fishing overalls in Montevideo.

Rain is falling. Frogs become droplets and rain down from above. When someday real rain falls that will be a real day. A day to see real rain and real umbrellas, a day the severity of the sky becomes our own.
Rain is falling.

When rain falls in the closet in the pocket of my cardigan in the sea inside my seashells, fish go swimming in an even deeper sea. But if all those fish shared a single swim bladder? There would be no need for rain,
but rain is falling, and that is fortunate.
